“Pro Scientia” Summer Academy 2014

On 8th September, Dr. Stefan Wurster was invited as a guest speaker at the annual summer academy of “Pro Scientia”, an interdisciplinary network for talented students in Austria. He was in charge of the workshop “Nuclear energy: Hybris?” in which participants learned about the assets and drawbacks of nuclear energy generation, in particular nuclear fission and fusion.

High-Entropy Alloys – A novel material class with great potential

The basic concept of high entropy alloys pursues the strategy to maximize the so-called configurational entropy of an alloy by increasing the number of alloying elements that should minimize the Gibbs free energy in favor of a mono-phase material. In other words: By producing a high degree of disorder or confusion in the alloy by mixing many different elements, the material “decides” to crystallize in only one single phase. This idea does not work out for all variations of compounds, nevertheless, several alloys have been identified that follow this hypothesis.

Honor for efficient research

For the first time the Austrian Academy of Sciences awarded an efficiency-oriented additional research budget among their institutes.

NanoSPD6 – Metz, Frankreich

From June 29th to July 4th the 6th international congress on nano Severe Plastic Deformation (NanoSPD6) took place this time in Metz, France, where about 400 researchers from 5 different continents met to share their knowledge and latest results in that field. Located in lovely Lorraine at the Mosel River and close to the German border, the historic city offered a fantastic location for both, scientific and leisure activities.

Prof. Reinhard Pippan recieved the "Wöhler medal" from the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS)

For his pioneering work in educational development of the fatigue behaviour of materials, Prof. Reinhard Pippan was presented with the Wöhler medal from the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS).
The Wöhler medal is ESIS‘s highest award. On July 10, 2014, Prof. Reinhard Pippan accepted this honor during the 20th European Conference in Trondheim.

This award is just a further mark of excellence showcasing for the international reach of Leoben’s material scientists.
